About Our Preschool...
Our Infant, Toddler, and Pre-Kindergarten Programs are designed by our board to meet the unique needs of our parents and children. Our mission at Huguenot UMC Preschool is to prepare your child for a lifetime of successful learning. Our developmentally appropriate program supports your child's growth in a safe, nurturing, family-oriented environment.
Huguenot United Methodist Preschool began in 1971 as a social development program three mornings a week. In 1974 we began our Pre-K program. During the next 5 years, the Preschool purchased new equipment, carpeted all of the classrooms and completed the bathrooms in the back classrooms. In 1985, our Preschool and Mother's Morning Out programs combined to form a Preschool Center under the direction of Mrs. Laverne Jones. Since 2003, we have replaced the flooring in all of the classrooms and have added to and replaced playground equipment. We have also added fencing and rubber mulch to the playgrounds and sinks to any of the classrooms that did not have them. In 2009 we added our extended care program and the following year we added an infant program and an expanded summer program.
With a student/staff ratio of approximately 5:1, we cater to individual children's needs in the age range of infant (3-months) to 5 years old. We accomplish this with a staff of dedicated and talented individuals. We currently have a religious exempt childcare certification from the Virginia Department of Social Services and have met and exceeded all of the requirements needed for this certification including student/staff ratio, health safety, square footage per child, and fire safety. In 2007, we achieved national accreditation through NAC/AELL and in 2015 we joined the Virginia Quality program. We look forward to continuing to excel as we maintain our high standards for Excellence.
Currently, we have transitioned from our foundation of focusing completely on social development to offering a creative, loving, and relaxed atmosphere for children's first learning experiences. We offer an innovative music and movement program; expanded outdoor play facilities; special programs including drama, theater and other outside resources; daily process-oriented creative art; cooking projects and many other themes and activities. As our Preschool Center continues to grow, we look ahead to a wonderful year of striving to meet the needs of our families, our students, our community and our church.
